Wrong Answer...or....Wrong Question....

This video has got about 800 thousand views (by 7:30 AM on April 21, 2009). I doubt whether Kristen Dalton, the actual winner gets this coverage. All this is because that the Miss California - Carrie Prejean, has answered "I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody there. But that's how I was raised and that's how I think it should be" for the question of legalizing the same sex marriage in the American states.

I do not want to get into the topic whether she should have said this answer. Our media is doing a commendable job on this topic. My primary objective in this post is to analyze the question instead of the answer. Should the same-sex marriage be legalized?

My point is why should the government legalize the same sex marriage or otherwise? If the Government say same-sex marriage is illegal, what will happen tomorrow? Can the government tell me that I should love only a particular girl and not the other? It is possible... The concept of same sex marriage is a very trickier one.

There was a time in which same sex marriage was perfectly acceptable in the society. Even in the Greek empire (which is still considered to be one of the societies at the pinnacle of civilization), the same sex is the only true form of love. The opposite sex is the purpose of reproduction and not love. Even the great emperor Alexander the great was said to have sexual relationship with Hephaestion.

In the words of Plato, "Homosexuality is regarded as shameful by barbarians and by those who live under despotic governments just as philosophy is regarded as shameful by them, because it is apparently not in the interest of such rulers to have great ideas engendered in their subjects, or powerful friendships or passionate love-all of which homosexuality is particularly apt to produce."*

What happened later? People changed. The majority of the people believed that same sex marriage is not correct and so their numbers reduced.

So, people and civilization could always change their ideas about same sex marriage and they must have complete freedom to decide. It is their personal life and Government should play no part in legalizing or otherwise. The state should stay away from the personal relationships and let the individuals decide their life.

I completely agree with you. Government doesnot have to interfere with the individuals interests and fantasies as long as it doesnot interfere with some others personal interest.

Coming to the topic of whether or not same sex marriage is good/acceptable/conceptualized, we need to understand what we mean by Marriage. Thinking deep into the purpose of marriage would provide an insight on this.
